Description

April 4-, 1950 B. MAIILILARD 2,503,116 AMMUNITION CHARGING DEVICE Fox AUTOMATIC ARMS Filed May 25, 1945 wRQl I ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 4,1950 a A-MIVIUNITION" CHARGING DEVICE FOR AUTO'MATIC ARMS.
Bernard Maill'ard; Geneva, Switzerland; assignor B'revetsAero-Mecaniques S; At, a corporationvofi- Switzerland 3 Claims. 1
The present invention relates to cartridge cases for firearms.
The object of my invention is to provide a cartridge case which is of simple construction and reliable in operation.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, given merely by way of example and in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical section on the line l-l of Fig. 3 of a cartridge case according to my invention;
Fig. 2 is a section of this case on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3 r
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The cartridge case shown by the drawings includes a vertical elongated magazine It], with a sliding member ll movable vertically therein in piston-like fashion. Magazine I is adapted to accommodate four columns of cartridges l5 bearing freely upon one another and having their axes horizontal and parallel to two of the vertical walls of the magazine. These columns of cartridges are supported by sliding member ll.
Said member II is urged upwardly by a cable I2 connected to member ll through a spring [3.
At the top, the side walls of magazine I0 that are parallel to the axes of the cartridges converge toward each other as shown at 25 so as to dorm finally a narrow conduit 26 through which only one column of cartridges can pass. The outlet of this conduit 26 opens into the firearm feed passage Hi.
In order to guide the cartridges arriving in four vertical columns, I provide a deflector ll, of quadrilateral prismatic shape provided in the middle top portion of the magazine and adapted to cooperate with the converging walls 25 of magazine In, so as to cause first the two columns of cartridges on either side of deflector I! to merge into a single one, and then the two columns thus formed to merge in turn into a single one which moves through conduit 26.
Deflector H is hollow and, on the inside thereof, there is provided a pulley l8 about which passes cable I 2 which, after passing about another pulley IQ, is finally connected to a motor l4 which, through said cable l2, urges support I I in the upward direction.
In a general manner, while I have, in the above description, disclosed what I deem to be practical and emcient embodiments of my invention, it should be well understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be changes made in the arrangement, disposition and form of the parts without departing from the principle of the present invention as comprehended within in the scope of the accompanying claims.
I claim:
1. Apparatus for feeding to an automatic firearm cartridges having no connection between them comprising an elongated magazine for receiving a plurality of columns of cartridges positioned therein with their axes transversely of the magazine, means slidably mounted in said magazine for movement longitudinally thereof and engaging the end cartridges of the columns for moving said columns of cartridges through the magazine, hollow cartridge deflecting means positioned intermediate the columns of cartridges and at the discharge end of the magazine, a flexible traction member connected to said moving means for drawing the same through the magazine, guide means within said hollow deflecting means for guiding said flexible traction member and a motor independent of the magazine for actuating said flexible traction member.
2. Apparatus for feeding to an automatic firearm cartridges having no connection between them comprising an elongated magazine for receiving a plurality of columns of cartridges positioned therein with their axes transversely of the magazine, said magazine having a width slightly less than the sum of the diameters of four cartridges so that the cartridges of four columns of cartridges will be in over-lapped relation, means slidably mounted in said magazine for movement longitudinally thereof and engaging the end cartridges of the columns for moving said columns of cartridges through the magazine, a flexible band traction member connected to said moving means for drawing the same through the magazine and extending between the inner pair of four columns of cartridges in said magazine, hollow cartridge deflecting means positioned intermediate the columns of cartridges and at the discharge end of the magazine, guide means within said hollow deflecting means for guiding said flexible traction member and a motor independent of the magazine for actuating said flexible traction member.
.3. Apparatus for feeding an automatic firearm with cartridges having no connection between them which comprises, in combination, an elongated magazine for receiving a plurality of columns of cartridges positioned therein with their axes parallel between them and transverse to the longitudinal direction of said magazine, an
output guiding channel adapted to receive a single column of cartridges from the discharge end of said magazine, a hollow cartridge deflector located in the middle portion of said discharge end of the magazine opposite the inlet of said output. channel, means slidably mounted in said magazine for movement longitudinally thereof adapted to engage the end cartridges of the columns to push them longitudinally toward said discharge end, at least one flexible traction member connected to said slidable means eX- tending longitudinally of said magazine, a pulley for said flexible traction member located inside i said deflector, and motor means on the outside of said magazine for exerting a continuous pull 15 on said traction member passing on said pulley.,
